While in college I experienced a 40% pneumothorax; unable to breathe easily, I checked myself into the local hospital where they wanted to pierce my chest with two glass tubes in order to re-inflate my lung.
The surgeon wanted to perform the surgery immediately. In response, I suggested we wait 3 days for self inflation. He said no and I said you’re fired; get out of my room. His response was, I quit and I said no problem. Five days later I left the hospital and later became a distance runner with the university cross country team. At 70, I continue to run cross country.
